Game Changer

May 6, 2017

Before the roar of the 1920’s , J. R. Robinson was born into the farming community of Cairo, Georgia. Like a lot of babies born during those years in the rural Deep South, J. R.’s parents scraped out a living by sharecropping. In this hard area, young Jack began to ply his trade. His game was baseball and his memory is forever etched into the fabric of Americana by his trade name, Jackie Robinson.

To call Jackie Robinson a “Game Changer” might be an understatement. He made his debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers in April of 1947. Can you remember those days? The hangover of war is still hanging in the air. Although WWII had officially ended about 18 months earlier, there was still the cleaning up. Baseball was one of the tools our country used for a return to normalcy. And into this frenzy walks Jack Roosevelt Robinson and quickly makes himself a household name. The acceptance wasn’t immediate or universal but his mark on the game was forever decided when, 50 years after his debut, Major League Baseball retired his number league wide.

Last weekend here at Hillcrest, you showed your willingness to be “Game Changers”. After last weeks offering for the Grace Chapel church building, we had raised over $15,500. This church will be built in an area currently surrounded by 5 big public high schools and within a five-minute walk of 100,000 people. Grace Chapel will be instrumental in impacting the eternal future of many people. And with Hillcrest being the lead on this project, we will develop relationships with people we would’ve never met any other way. Hillcrest, thank you for being “Game Changers” but we can’t let this accomplishment be what defines us for the next season. As we discussed in church last week, let’s develop a heart of compassion (Matthew 20:29-34) and let the plight of others move us to action. Keep pressing on to the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus (Philippians 3:14). When you do, you’ll never regret it.
