“It’s All I Want”

October 13, 2017

Do you remember Christmas mornings from your youth? If you were like most 10 year old children, you were so excited to see what “Santa Claus” had left under the tree. You probably had a toy picked out that you just knew would make your young life complete and worthwhile. All your hope and attention was spent on trying to see if the one thing you had wanted so intensely was really at your house.

How often do you have that same desire know that you are a few years removed from 10? Even though the object of our desire changes, each of us can relate to wanting something so bad it consumes a lot of our time and attention. Maybe the desire includes harmony in a strained marriage, or patience in dealing with grandchildren who don’t see things like you do. The want might be enough money to pay for heat, or a friend who will listen and encourage you. Sometimes those desires are fulfilled, but other times it seems that it takes forever for a successful conclusion.

Here are a couple of ideas to help when all you desire is this one thing. Evaluate your desire from a different perspective (Psalm 62:5) It is possible that what you want isn’t what God has for you right now. I am dealing with this personally right now and I can tell you from experience that waiting when you feel you have God’s heart and desire front and center isn’t easy. Ask God to give you desires that He blesses (Psalm 37:4). Sometimes the desire for more is a ticket to self-reliance. If we have more money or a better job, the temptation might be to drift away from God in a spiritual sense. A better prayer is that He will give us what we need and that we will be faithful in that. Commit to finding what you want in Him. When you do, you’ll never regret it.
