“Let’s Be Broken”

“Let’s be broken”

This week opened with a shock to our American system. A 64-year-old man in Las Vegas helped us set a grisly new record with over 50 people killed at the end of a concert. From what has been reported, it is the largest mass shooting casualty count in our history. The stories of the survivors are frightening. The accounts of those who risked their own life to help others who were down are many. And yet the death toll continues to rise as our country asks “Why?”

There will be a time for the motive and understanding to be discovered. Think about your reaction to the news. I’m guessing that most of us don’t personally know anyone impacted by these events. But what was your reaction when you heard the news? Unfortunately, some of us have lost the heaviness of heart these events should bring. Maybe it’s because these events seem to happen with some regularity. Or the distance from the event insulates us from the feelings of fear that would have taken over if you had been an eyewitness.

Don’t grow calloused in your processing of events like these. We mourn with our nation because of a tragedy that will affect scores of people directly. Daniel gives a great example to follow when it comes to national mourning in Daniel 9. He lumps himself in with the children of Israel and notes “…we have sinned and committed iniquity.” Use this example of Daniel and beg God for national reconciliation. Our country is divided and partisan politics aren’t solving anything. Only when the Christ Followers of this great land passionately pray and repent will we see significant change. Don’t grow cold or complacent. Romans 12:15 exhorts us to “Weep with those who weep”. Will you commit that today to seek spiritual healing for our land by weeping with those who are weeping? When you do, you’ll never regret it.
