The Sight of Faith

July 7, 2017

Do you remember the question from your youth that inquired, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” The answers are often filled with hope and a little bit of naiveté. My firm conviction in my youth was that I would be an astronaut. I rehearsed that answer often and talked about it more. (For fair disclosure, I am not and astronaut, nor have I ever played one on TV.) Somewhere in those years, space lost its allure and I poured my passions into other pursuits.

There are a lot of Christ Followers that might echo the same sentiments in regard to spiritual matters. Times when spiritual pursuit loses its draw and we find ourselves in a different routine. And then years click by and next thing we know, everything Christian feels weird.

The good news is a simple focus adjustment can begin a process of revival in our hearts. A condensed version of this process can be seen in Matthew 14:22-33. Undoubtedly Peter, the outspoken and reaction prone disciple, is at the center of this perfect learning event. Take a moment to notice where his eyes are in verses 26-28. They are on the Lord and it moves Peter to an action that could be seen as either incredibly brave or extremely ill advised. Continue reading and note where his eyes are in verse 30. Their focus has moved and so has Peter’s buoyancy. Where His focus is at determines where he ends up.

A W Tozer says “Fear causes me to look around at my circumstances instead of up at the smiling face of God”. Peter would probably second that. It described his night on the Galilean Sea. How about you, has fear caused you to lose your focus? Has fear caused you to pursue other passions? Commit today to placing your focus back on “… the smiling face of God.” When you do, you’ll never regret it.
