“Why did I say that?”

“Why did I say that?”

If you are normal, that question has spent some time top of mind. It might center on a secret that a friend asked you to keep confidential. Or perhaps an exaggeration that was designed to make you look and feel better is revealed as untrue. There are any number of times that our words can get us into trouble, and these times we wonder why we haven’t been able to put these things behind us.

Philippians 1 presents a framework for evaluating the work of God in our life. Paul opens this letter to his friends in Philippi by declaring appreciation and prayer for them. Tucked in the middle of this passage sits these words “… being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun …” This statement by Paul has some large repercussions for us as we navigate life’s challenges. Remember that you are a work in progress. We will not always respond as we should. We will not always choose the spiritual, the Godly, or the moral option. This is why God is working in us. He knows this reality too. (If He could “program” us to always choose the right answer, we would lose our free will.)

God is working in us and Paul goes on to add that He will complete this task. Our hope is tied up in what God did for us (Justification), what He is doing in us (Sanctification), and what He will do for us (Glorification). And the ultimate completion will happen at the return of Jesus Christ – called “the day of Jesus Christ” by Paul. This day will be a time of reward and blessing as the truth of what we had previously held in faith becomes our reality. Let Paul’s words encourage us today. God is working in us, and will continue that work. When you do, you’ll never regret it.
