“Looking forward to the end!”

October 30, 2020

A recent look in our mailbox found the regulation size box stuffed full. Included were plenty of catalogs offering seasonal home decor, gifts, and delectable deserts, and a fair share of colleges trying to catch the attention of a certain high school senior. But overwhelmingly the bulk of the room was taken up by political mailers. Two things I’m guessing most Americans can agree on – someone is making a mint on producing full color advertising, and we are excited to see the amount of mail return to normal.

While we look towards November 3rd and the end of campaign mail season, there’s also a bit of angst with regards to how the election will go. Each of us want our candidate, party, or platform to prevail. And we’ve seen an erosion in a common decency to others who hold ideas which are contrary to our personal choices. There’s a deep divide in America that this election cycle has revealed. Most of us don’t like what we see.

Here’s some good news – regardless of who wins on Election Tuesday, God is still on His throne. He is still Sovereign. He still is desirous of lives committed to Him. I’m afraid that some of us have set the government up as a type of a demigod. We are convinced that a candidate or party will save the world. Each candidate is clearly offering a story of how the world will be better or greater if they are at the helm. But God will still be God on Wednesday – or whatever day it is when the winner is declared.

Surely we should vote with Christian values in mind. But never forget that the Christ Follower has a different standard. We long for the appearing of Christ, not the inauguration of your candidate (2 Timothy 4:8). We look for the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6). And while we look forward to the end of election season, we also are aware that there is an end of the world coming (John 9:4). Take heart fellow Christian. God is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8). Nothing, even presidential elections, is able to change that.
