They got it right!

June 30, 2017

Monday morning started off with several Supreme Court decisions that will have long lasting implications. For those that watch The Courts calendar, there was some expectation and hesitation going in to today. Perhaps the biggest question mark is the possible retirement of a long serving Justice, the Honorable Anthony Kennedy. This retirement would set the course of the court for the foreseeable future. And as this is written, there has been no announcement yet.

A well-respected lawyer posted a video summary regarding the decisions made this morning. I was surprised at how fast the response came and took the two minutes to get his take; a favorable commendation for the courts decision on a matter close to his heart. He repeated several times “the court got it right.” But what if the court hadn’t gotten it “right”. There are people on the other side who would argue that the Justices are demonstrating faulty thinking.

I want to give you a word of caution before celebrating a perceived win or deriding a perceived loss. Having The Supreme Court (@SCOTUS) rule in favor of your side makes life easier. But for the Christ Follower, the easy life isn’t what we are called to pursue. Paul tells us that doing good (i.e. following the laws) will bring us “… praise from the [rulers]” (Romans 13:3). So when you can, you need to live by the law of the land. But don’t be lulled to sleep by a court decision that affirms your position. Our cause and our calling are much too important to simply long for governing approval. If you are a Christ Follower, you are an ambassador here with a message from The King. This message is one of love, sacrifice, and redemption (Hebrews 9:12). This message also includes urgency (Matthew 4:17). Seek to be the best ambassador you can. When you do, you’ll never regret it.
