“Was it worth it?”

September 30, 2017

At the fall pastor’s meeting I attended in Tulsa, we honored a missionary couple who had served for 50 years in a remote Alaskan Wilderness. I was mesmerized by their stories of moving to an area with no electricity, pastoring a church in an Indian Village, and using a small airplane to transport children to Bible Camp. The airplane was able to get them close, but a seven-mile ride up the river was needed for arrival. This faithful husband and wife were presented a globe to commemorate these events, and many more that weren’t mentioned.

Imagine giving your life to something and all you have to show for it was a hand made artifact. You might question if it was worth it. But for this couple, the reward was much more than a globe. Here are a couple of thoughts to help a Christ Follower stick it out when you wonder if it might be worth it.

Having peace with God makes it worth if for today (Romans 5:1-5). That doesn’t mean that every day will be sunny and without hurt, but it does mean that we don’t have to worry about our standing before God. He is not opposed to us. If it’s been a while since you’ve thanked God for this peace, do it today.

Having hope makes tomorrow worth it (Romans 5:2 indicates that it brings rejoicing). It’s amazing how quickly life can change. A lady I know of had a headache one day and was diagnosed as stage 3 ovarian cancer a few days later. A confident expectation makes tomorrow worth it.

Having an eternal home in heaven makes eternity worth it. When our faith is made sight and all that we have believed is revealed as true, we will know it was worth it. Commit today to standing strong even when the end seems uncertain. To quote the hymn writer “It will be worth it all when we see Jesus” and you’ll never regret it.
